Allergy alert: use with caution on persons allergic to ragweed
Check for Head Lice:
Seat your child under a bright, preferably natural, light. Lice will be hard to find because they are tiny and fast-moving.
Examine your child's head from different angles as newly-laid eggs are nearly transparent.
Part your child's hair in different areas, particularly around the ears and nape of the neck, examining the scalp closely.
Look for small white-to-yellow specks the size of poppy seeds, and for adult lice moving quickly away from the light. To distinguish between lice eggs and dandruff, try to dislodge them with a fine-toothed comb. If they are resistant to removal, they are probably eggs.
After the lice treatment has been applied, it is important to carefully comb out nits and eggs. This step is crucial as most eggs and nits are attached securely to the hair and cannot be washed out, leaving them behind to hatch and create a future infestation.
Since this step can take upwards of an hour, try to find some distractions for your child such as games that require minimal movement, television or movies, schoolwork, or one of the fun activity sheets located on our Child Activities page that can help turn this chore into a bonding experience for you and your child.
You don't need to discard all items that have come in contact with the infected family member, but it is advisable to thoroughly clean these items.
